Alexis Ohanian: Reddit, Initialized and 776

How Alexis Ohanian went from Reddit to Initialized Capital and 776: dated fund sizes from press and SEC filings, and angel versus fund investing.

2026-05-231,291 words

Alexis Ohanian co-founded Reddit in 2005 and the venture firm Initialized Capital around 2011 to 2012, then left it in 2020 to start 776. That firm closed a $500 million second fund in February 2022. He invests through both funds and his own capital, and CB Insights credits him with 155 investments as of October 2026.

Alexis Ohanian is hard to file as either an angel or a venture capitalist, which is exactly why he is worth studying. He started as an operator, became a partner in a seed fund, and then built his own firm with an in-house software platform. This profile follows the public record: press coverage, SEC filings and the funds' own announcements. Every dollar figure carries the date of its source.

Who is Alexis Ohanian, in investing terms?

CNN Business describes him as the co-founder of Reddit, which launched in 2005, and of Initialized Capital with Garry Tan, and says both founders were also partners at Y Combinator when the firm launched. Sources date Initialized Capital's founding to different years: 2011 in Fortune's 2022 report, 2012 in CNN Business and in Fortune's 2018 profile. This page says around 2011 to 2012. That 2018 profile reported in May that he had stepped back from his day-to-day role at Reddit to return to investing full time, arguing that he could have more impact backing dozens of companies than running one.

In 2020, TechCrunch reported that he had left his Reddit board seat earlier that year, that Reddit had filled it with Y Combinator CEO Michael Seibel, and that he had left Initialized about three months before an SEC filing showed him raising a new fund called 776 with a $150 million target.

What did he back at Initialized Capital?

Fortune's 2018 profile put Initialized at more than $250 million under management and listed Coinbase, Instacart, Zenefits, Opendoor, Soylent, Cruise Automation and Standard Cognition among its investments. In that interview, Ohanian said Initialized wrote the first check into Coinbase and credited Reddit's bitcoin communities for spotting the trend early.

CNN's October 2018 report adds the scale change. Initialized raised a $225 million fund, its fourth and largest, and planned checks around $1 million, up from about $50,000 for some of its first investments. Ohanian and Tan described their approach as thesis agnostic, with a preference for businesses that have software at their core.

What is 776, and how big has it grown?

776 appears in the record as a sequence of dated events:

1

September 2020. An SEC filing shows a new fund with a $150 million target.

2

February 2022. TechCrunch reported that 776 closed $500 million across two vehicles for its second fund, with $300 million aimed at the earliest-stage companies and $200 million for growth-stage companies. It put assets under management at $750 million, a year after the first $150 million fund closed.

3

March 2022. TechCrunch covered the 776 Titans Fund, which gives emerging managers an initial $500,000 each. The first three were Marques Brownlee's MKBHD Ventures, Crenshaw Ventures and Huge If True Ventures.

4

2023 to 2024. A Form D amendment for 776 Fund III, L.P. shows an offering of up to $520 million, $186.6 million sold at the time of filing, and a first sale on April 24, 2023. It lists Ohanian as managing director of the general partners. A Form D is a notice of an offering, so it shows money raised so far, not a final close.

The 2022 TechCrunch article also describes the portfolio at the time: more than 38 companies, including Alt, Pipe, Axie Infinity and Metafy. It reports that the firm almost always leads the rounds it joins, and that about 40 percent of the portfolio then was crypto-related. Ohanian told TechCrunch the firm follows the smartest founders it meets, and also saw momentum in climate, space, food tech and software.

Is he an angel or a venture capitalist?

Both, and the difference matters for founders. An angel writes personal checks and can move on a single conversation. A fund manager invests limited partners' money under a mandate, with reporting and follow-on reserves. CB Insights lists him as an investor with 155 investments and 41 portfolio exits as of October 2026, plus one fund, 776. A person-level count like that can blend personal and fund deals, so it shows scale, not a pure angel record.

The practical rule: pitching him personally is a different conversation from pitching the firm. Ask which pool of capital is writing the check, whether the firm expects to lead, and how much it reserves for follow-on rounds. Our piece on solo angel versus fund investing lays out those differences, and rolling funds versus traditional angel investing covers the structures that sit between them.

What does he look for in founders?

In the Fortune interview he described looking for relentlessness. An idea is easy, he said, and the hard part is testing it with customers and surviving when they will not pay. He weighs what a founder has actually built over what they say they will build. In 2018 he also said he still used Reddit to spot early trends, which is the sourcing edge of a platform founder.

Founders can use that directly. If you pitch an investor with his profile, bring evidence of customer contact, not a deck about the market. For the founder's side of that conversation, read what angel investors look for in founders.

What should founders and new angels take from this?

Three points hold across the sources.

First, funds change an investor's behavior. Check sizes at Initialized were set to rise from about $50,000 in its first investments to about $1 million over six years, and 776 later split its capital between earliest-stage and growth. A founder who meets the same investor years apart may face a different check and a different expectation.

Second, concentration is a choice with consequences. 776 said crypto was about 40 percent of its portfolio in early 2022, while saying it followed founders into other areas. A thesis can help an investor and still raise risk for the fund.

Third, tools scale a network. A March 2022 TechCrunch interview describes 776's in-house software, Cerebro, built to search its network of contacts and request introductions. Individual angels can borrow the idea with a simple tracker, and portfolio tracking tools for angels compares the options.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:How much has 776 raised?

The public record shows a $150 million first fund and a $500 million second fund across two vehicles, reported in February 2022. A 2024 Form D amendment for Fund III shows $186.6 million sold against a $520 million offering at that date. Treat the Fund III number as a snapshot, not a final close.

Q:When did Alexis Ohanian leave Initialized Capital?

TechCrunch's September 2020 report said he had left about three months earlier, to work on what became 776. He had returned to investing full time in 2018, after stepping back from his daily role at Reddit.

Q:Does 776 invest at the seed stage?

Yes, at least for part of its capital. The 2022 announcement allocated $300 million to the earliest possible stage and $200 million to companies at their growth stage. Titans checks of $500,000 go to emerging fund managers, not startups.

Q:How many investments has Alexis Ohanian made?

CB Insights shows 155 investments and 41 portfolio exits as of October 2026. Because trackers count differently and mix personal and fund deals, use the figure for scale rather than as an exact angel total.
